thabo sekoaila

Thabo Sekoaila was born on 12 September 1980 in the Village of Fairlourie/ Flora near Polokwane. From early age he showed an interest in drawing and he was encouraged by family members and supplied him with photographs of friends to copy. While herding goats and cattle as a youth, he also made sculptures from clay, wood and wire.

Sekoaila studied for the National Diploma in Fine Arts at the Technikon of Witwatersrand. He also obtained a B – Tech, F.A. (2003) Degree at the Technikon Witwatersrand majoring in sculpture. While studying there he did some studio teaching for the Art Access Section of the Art, Design and Architecture Department and was also awarded Best Student Award in 1999.

He participated subsequently in several group exhibitions and curatorial projects. He had also participated in art conferences, workshop programmes, giving talks and lectures at various local community centres. Sekoaila has an active interest in contemporary South African art as a curator, tutor, designer and practitioner.

His art is represented in the collections of the University of Johannesburg and other private collections.

Currently Sekoaila is the Curator of Visual Arts, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Springs Art Gallery, lives in Kwa Thema, East of Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, South Africa.
